We’ve been focused on sustainability for decades, from our closed loop manufacturing process to our recycling program. This is a big factor in how we kept our factory open when 99% of shoes worn in the US are imported.
Sustainability and our circular model is the key. Waste is not only bad for the environment; it is bad for a business. This is the Okabashi way.
Used shoes and scrap materials from production are ground up to be recycled. We call this "regrind" and we use it in all of our newly produced shoes, saving nearly 100 tons of scrap material from reaching landfills every year.
Our bio-based material is combined with recycled material to create new shoes. Our proprietary blend is made up of approximately 40% US-grown soy.
Okabashi shoes contain 25% recycled material on average. We've made over 35 million pairs of shoes, and we're not slowing down.
Okabashi shoes are molded from a proprietary, recyclable material that is 40% US-grown soy by weight, making them both vegan and cruelty-free. Our materials is also BPA, latex, and phthalate free, and is made in the USA for a lower carbon footprint.
Compared to operating overseas, we save an estimated 134,000 gallons of fuel per year by not shipping our product from Asia to the US.
Durability is key for sustainability. Our two year guarantee contrasts with typical disposable flip flops that are cut out of sheets of foam, and eventually ends up in landfills or oceans.

If you return your well-loved and worn Okabashi shoes to our factory, we will recycle them for use in new Okabashi products or other non-apparel goods.
